Goshen County Economic Development Corp. conducted a housing needs assessment in 2006 when Torrington was selected as the site for construction of the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution.

Changes in the economic climate since then have greatly impacted the workforce availability and housing market.

Opinions have varied from those who see a serious need for affordable rental housing, to others who are cautious about over-building.

In November 2009, members of the economic development board met with officials from the Department of Corrections to identify the need for workforce housing.

Surveys to gather data about the household needs were filled out by WMCI employees, based on the input received at this meeting and the survey results, Goshen County Economic Development Corp. convened a work session of community stakeholders to plan strategies to address the workforce housing needs.

Landlords, Lenders, Realtors, City officials, and many others have worked hard to assess all the needs.

We caught up with Lisa Johnson Executive Director of Goshen County Economic Development Corp after the meeting to get her outlook on the situation.
