Attending a seminar by Chief Billy Janes, identity theft is a problem. It does happen and you should be aware.
Identity theft is a serious crime. It occurs when your personal information is stolen and used without your knowledge to commit fraud or other crimes. Identity theft can cost you time and money. It can destroy your credit and ruin your good name.
Here are some tips to protect your identity.
Shred or burn all financial documents and paperwork with personal information.
Protect your Social Security number. Don’t carry your S.S. card in your wallet or give it out to anyone.
Be alert to signs that require your immediate attention such as:
Bills that don’t arrive as expected
Unexpected credit cards or account statements
Denials of credit for no apparent reason
Or calls on purchases you didn’t make.
By law, you are allowed a free copy of your credit report once a year.
Go to www.AnnualCreditReport.com or call 877-322-8228 to receive your free copy of your credit report.

If Identity theft happens to you there are 4 steps to follow.
- Place a Fraud Alert on your credit report – you only need to call one and this will alert creditors to follow certain procedures before they open new accounts.
- Close Accounts – contact your bank; close any credit card accounts that may have been tampered with.
- File a police report – This will help with creditors who may want proof of the crime.
- Report the theft to the Federal Trade Commission by calling 877-ID THEFT or go online to ftc.gov/idtheft
Once your identity is compromised, it is hard to correct, if you’re unsure of what to do, call your local police department for help.
