Torrington’s Downtown merchants are planning a downtown festival in the coming months and hopefully there are more on the horizon. Roger Huckfelt and his fellow downtown business owners approached the city council Tuesday night with a proposal for a street festival complete with food, beverages, shopping and live entertainment. He said the biggest hurdle was getting the city to approve an open container permit for the events–which was approved unanimously.

“I want to thank the city council for allowing us to move forward and listen to us. It’s been a long time since we’ve had an event such as this in our downtown area and with any luck we’ll have many more. This will re-energize and revitalize our downtown and create a reason to sit and stay in Torrington and come to our town.”

Now the businesses will focus on planning the festivals—the first will either be in September or October. He said they will be looking for organizations to help provide food for the events. Those interested can contact the downtown merchants.
