Torrington High School students learn valuable life lesson following Wyoming 3A State Drama Competition

The Torrington High School Drama Club recently took the stage at the 3A State Drama competition in Casper and came out victorious – or so they initially thought.  As THS Drama Coach Christine Quillen explains, when she began to review the scoring sheets, there was a discrepancy that showed Torrington was actually in 2nd place behind Worland High School.

Quillen stated that she brought it to the attention of state officers who did not immediately recognize the error and assured her the points were correct; however after finally recognizing the error, they told Quillen that in the past when this has happened, the precedent has been to call a tie.  After she spoke with Torrington High School administrators Mr. Cooper and Mr. Plendl as well as fellow coach Erin Jespersen and the drama club, the decision was made to concede first place to Worland High School.

“Torrington High School’s mission statement reads: THS is committed to student success through academics, citizenship and activities,” Quillen stated in an email to Worland Drama coach Rick Dorn. “I told my kids that they had experienced success in their activity, and now it was time for them to experience success as citizens.”

Quillen explained to Dorn that collectively, the group decided that they wanted to do the right thing and not take something that was earned by others, and they felt really good about their decision.

“They are an awesome group of young adults. One student remembered back to the Miss America incident, and said we didn't want to be remembered like that,” said Quillen.

The Torrington High School Drama Club was triumphant in more ways than one – learning a huge life lesson that doing what is right will always bring you out on top. With a new motto coined to add to their 2nd place title “State Champs for two days; Champion Citizens for life,” The 2017 THS Drama Club will remain champions on the stage of life.
