The “Snow Removal Meeting” on Monday night was a great success in bringing together snow removal contractors, community members, and City of Torrington staff to discuss ways that we can all work together for community safety and convenience during big snow events. Here are a few highlights and interesting pieces of information from the team at Streets and Sanitation:1. The City of Torrington has two plow trucks and one grader that they use to plow and sand City streets during a snowstorm. They are pictured below, along with most of the ruggedly handsome crew who work long hours to keep our streets safe when it snows. 2. To maximize available resources and manage expenses, the team at Streets and Sanitation will generally wait until the snow has stopped falling in a snow event before they begin plowing, unless road conditions deteriorate and become impassable or unsafe. 3. When a snow event hits, City Staff focus on clearing established snow routes and the “Downtown Area” of Torrington first. This area is generally defined from East D Street to West C Street, and from 19th Avenue to 23rd Avenue. Focusing on streets in these areas keeps businesses in our community open and allows community members to access the goods and services that they need. You can find more information on snow routes here: www.torringtonwy.gov/faq.aspx?qid=105 4. The timing of snow removal is very important for the success of clearing the streets in our community. Most of the “Downtown Area” must be cleared late at night, or in the early morning hours so that plows and other removal equipment can operate safely and get access to on-street parking areas. This is where coordination with commercial snow removal contractors becomes critical so that snow isn’t pushed onto the City Street after City Staff completes their snow removal operation. When this occurs, it creates buildups of packed snow and ice at the curb that become unsafe and very difficult to remove. 5. The City uses a mixture of sand and salt to spread on streets for traction and ice-melting purposes. The mixture contains 90% sand and 10% salt. For some perspective on how significant this winter has been compared to most winters, the City has used an estimated 600 tons of this mixture so far this year. On an average year, the City uses between 200 and 300 tons. That’s a lot of sand and salt! How can we all help each other during this challenging winter season? 1. The most important thing that we can do is to clear sidewalks and pathways in a timely manner. City Ordinance requires that snow be removed within 24 hours of when it stops snowing. 2. If you have a driveway that crosses the sidewalk, please clear a path across the driveway so that pedestrians can pass. This becomes especially important on sloped driveways, as they quickly become icy and dangerous. 3. If you are moving snow by shovel, or especially with snow removal equipment, please don’t push snow to the end of the sidewalk and pile it where the sidewalk intersects with the street. This makes it very challenging for pedestrians to cross the street and it often plugs storm drains at our intersections. This creates large pools of water when temperatures warm, and of course, the water turns into huge sheets of ice when it cools off again. 4. Take it slow and take care of each other!!!!! Brutal weather makes it even more important that we plan ahead and watch out for our neighbors. These circumstances will pass, but the people in our community will still be here with us when spring finally comes! ... See MoreSee Less
