Update for Western Sugar Employees

image description

November 28, 2018--Western Sugar Cooperative in Torrington plans to permanently lay off 92 employees by January 10th or within 14 days after.

According to Gilbert Servantez with Torrington Employment & Training (Workforce Center), there will be a Rapid Response Team taking action for employees at the sugar factory. This team includes the following: Department of Workforce Services, Division of Unemployment Insurance, Division of Employment &Training, Goshen County Economic Development Corporation, Eastern Wyoming College, and Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution.

Mr. Servantez said, “There is a need for correctional officers throughout the state.”

The Rapid Response Team meeting will likely take place the first week of January 2019. This meeting is intended for all current sugar factory employees to be able to meet and discuss with representatives from the Rapid Response Team. This will allow the employees to hear about their future opportunities and choices through Workforce Services. A Union meeting is scheduled at the plant for the beginning of next week.

Servantez also said, “I’ll be making calls to employers around the community who might be looking to hire quality employees. This is a great opportunity for them to latch onto quality workers.”

Workforce Services has a meeting scheduled with Eastern Wyoming College to discuss training and educational opportunities for displaced workers. There may be an opportunity for employees to take the HiSET exam.

“There also may be opportunities for training, such as CDL training” said Mr. Servantez.
