The Goshen County Sheriff’s Department urges the public to take extra precautions when traveling near railroad tracks after a vehicle collided with a train Thursday afternoon.

Goshen County Sheriff Jeremy Wardell reported that around 3:20 p.m., an individual was driving southbound on County Road 61, just a mile inside the state line off Highway 92, when he collided with the train.

“He was going slowly enough that he partially avoided the train, but damaged his truck. He sustained minor injuries and refused transport by ambulance,” said Wardell. He also mentioned that the train cars were very low-lying, carrying pipe, and that poor visibility was likely to blame in this incident.

Wardell spoke with a track inspector for Union Pacific Railroad who mentioned that the public should be aware of an increase in train traffic on that particular line.

“ In this particular part of the county, a lot of the crossings on county roads don’t have flashing lights or the arms that come down, so people have to pay attention and take the time to yield and look for trains before crossing,” said Wardell.
